Seven alleged members of Germany's far-left organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or are in custody.”
